DL Veteran Designation in Lieu of DD214

#1

Post by locke_n_load »

So, my wife is trying to send in her paperwok for her LTC, but is having problems getting the right copy of her DD214. In the past she has sent in a copy of it to get the veteran's designation on her driver's license. Seeing that DPS handle's both DLs and LTCs, would the veteran designation in the DL system and a copy of the designation on her license be enough for her to get the veteran's discount?

I believe I've heard that the DMV will do it the other way around, i.e. put it on the Drivers License if it's already on the LTC. Now I have it on both. I'm doing it for the discount, not the "recognition", but I had a Homeland Security Officer who was also a vet notice it once...

My original service member copy of my DD-214 copy 4 is very fragile and light and doesn't copy well. I don't like bringing it out, but I ordered a duplicate from the VA and it was obviously copied from a microfilm and copied even worse...So I just try to mess around with my MFC printer to make the highest quality copies I can.

This is a true statement. I just did it in August.

Verification of Veteran and Discharge Status
To request the Veteran designator, outside of your DL or ID renewal period, a Veteran must visit a driver license office and present one of the following:

DD-214
DD-215
NGB-22
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs disability letter
A Texas concealed handgun license (CHL) or license to carry (LTC) with a veteran designator
The document presented, may be a copy or an original and must show the veteran received an honorable discharge or a general discharge (under honorable conditions). To request the Veteran designator within your renewal period, the request may be made by mail or by visiting a driver license office.

I had my veteran designation on my DL before I got my CHL. When I sent in a copy of my DD-214, they gave me the discount but not the veteran designation. I ended up moving so I had to put in a change of address online. After I submitted it, I called DPS and noted that my DD-214 was on file when I got my original and that I didn't get the veteran designation...

My replacement CHL came without the designation... again :smash:

I got out in 1980 and did finally get my DD-214 by request via the internet this year. It is a very good copy and I have it clearly scanned as grey scale (although photo quality would be good too). I would suggest getting a new one which might be better.
I just renewed my LTC and emailed them a copy of my DD-214. Renewal took 3 weeks and now shows veteran. I believe you have to take your DD-214 to the DPS drivers license thing to get it on your drivers license. At least that's what it says online. I am eligible to renew on line but I don't see how to give them my DD-214 so I will renew at DPS. I don't know if they will add veteran to my drivers license without the DD-214 or go backwards from my LTC. I will ask when I renew.

for online DD-214. They are pretty efficient...for government.

Once you get a good copy of DD214 I highly recommend you go to the courthouse and get certified copies and have it recorded at the courthouse so that in the future you can always get copies.

I got my copy through the web site, but the problem was the low quality of the original, which I SAW them type up on my ship before I was discharged. The paper was very flimsy carbons and they used a crappy typewriter (remember them) with an old ribbon to type it. I think I'm going take the advice I got 25 years ago when I got out, and go to the county clerk and get them to record it.

I had the member 2 copy and they rejected it but the guy asked me if I had the certificate of discharge...like in the frame on the wall...I said yes. He said to fax it to him. I did and he said I was good to go...

Perhaps the reason you did not do this was your wanting to avoid having your DD 241 becoming a public record?

Like that is a big issue even if it exists. I had mine recorded in the city I was stationed in when I got out and then again in my home city when I made the trek back. I am no worse off for that decision and I can get my DD214 any time I need it if something happens to copies I have on hand.
