Questions about the shooting qualification....

1. If you start the shooting qualification with an auto in one caliber and that auto breaks down, can you continue the shooting portion with an auto in a different caliber and still qualify?

At this point, you are a virtual dead person and need to consider your actions.

Why did you attempt to qualify with a gun that was unreliable? Does it have a history of malfunctions? Did you intend to carry it for defense? How many rounds have you fired to establish its reliability?

I have seen this happen so many times that I could not possibly count the incidences but I am always amazed at the naivete of people attempting to qualify for their CHL license. Be sure of yourself and develop confidence in your gun before you put your life on the line. There is no "time out" on the street.

First off, thanks for all the answers.....

The gun I'm using IS reliable (Firestar 9mm...doesn't jam unless really dirty). It also happens to be my ONLY elligible auto (I'm more of a revolver guy.)

I've always been more of a "belt & suspenders" type of guy....better to be ready for the worst. And the first two questions were ones for which I had never been able to get a straight answer. I may borrow a 9mm for the test as a backup....just in case.

The last question came up when my friends & I discussed the instructor from whom we are taking the course. He apparently has this "no pre-loaded mags" rule, and my friend states that showing how to load the magazine is part of the qualification. I have my doubts about that part, so I thought I'd ask the experts......

I would just get your auto cleaned up and oiled up (not too much oil!) and not worry about it. Even if everything went wrong that day, I would bet almost anything that if you notified the instructor, one of two things would happen:

1. they would lend you a gun (some have extras)
2. they would allow you to finish with someone else's when they're done

Both of these are more likely to happen if you have ammo of the same caliber, so nobody is out anything by helping you. I think you'll find that pretty much all of your classmates are good people that would be willing to help a guy out, because they know you want your CHL as much as they do.

I was surprised on how big the target was compared to distance, I thought it was a joke when he told me to shoot at it. I could have hit it by throwing my bullets at it. Scored 250 out of 250.

Yeah I went to the range earlier this week and I guess there was a guy preparing for his CHL. He asked for a "green" target and sure enough it's about twice as big as the "normal" ones. I wonder if he'll be in my class, heh. Judging by his age and marksmanship I imagine he'd probably just be going for a renewal if anything though.

i had an oh Doo Doo moment while shooting. i was trying a new grip, i know not a good time to try a new grip but hey i shot 248 with it the first time and under pressure, anyway i fired the first shot of the round of fire and then nothing happened when i pulled the trigger again. i tip the muzzle up and see the slide locked back, crap time is ticking......i pull the slide, let it slam home and complete the course of fire. apparently my thumb bumped the slide release and locked it back.


the instructor said i wasn't going to pass because there were only three holes in my target, i argued but the bullets are going through the same ones. he said "i only count fifteen points" i'm glad he was joking.

So basically hit within the outer ring of a basic silhouette and score 5 points. Is there a time limit for a range or burst? Do you draw-fire? rapid-fire?

No draw-fire. Rapid-fire not necessary, either.

Each "round of fire", you will load five cartridges. The instructor will signal when to fire with a whistle. The first couple of "rounds of five", you will fire one shot on each whistle. After that, there will be some cases of two shots on the first whistle and three on the second. For about the last half of the course, most will be five shots after the (only) whistle.

You don't get any brownie points for rapid fire, but if you really want to, go ahead.

For the most part, he's looking for your adherence to the four safety rules, plus hitting the target, of course.

When I took the course (in November) we had six shooters on the line at a time (out of twelve students total), and our bunch had all scored enough points to pass before moving out to 21 feet.

No. You will fire 20 shots from 3 YARDS (9 feet) 20 shots from 7 YARDS (21 feet) and 10 shots fropm 15 YARDS (45 feet) .

Passing is 70% or 175.

Once again I stand corrected. In any case, the shooting part isn't all that difficult.

Since all the distances and timings seem to be totally standardized, are they posted somewhere (other than an earlier post in this thread)?

The distances and the total number of shots is standardized, but I think there is some leeway for the number of rounds loaded and the timing and sequencing because of the different types of guns (revolver vs auto) and magazine capacities.

You are correct in that shooting part is not that difficult. Everyone in my class passed, even those people who had never shot a gun before. And many used guns borrowed from the instructor.
