I more suspect that if they see someone with a gun they would just move on and victimize someone else, but who want to take the chance.

I'd probably be more worried about somone grabbing my gun and running off with it. If I were to open carry, I probably want a holster with a retention device.

One thing though...If Texas ever passes an open carry clause...

I think it would be prudent for those on this forum with the training and knowledge to discuss and possible bring some training to an event we could hold as a "CHL forum day" again and demonstrate some techniques for weapon retention drills...

If I am not mistaken, every commissioned law enforcement officer and deputy I know, that training is a requirement...

I figure you're not going to stand there and let some dunderhead yank and crank on your duty piece till it comes loose from the holster...Whether you're a civilian or L.E.O.

Most criminals aren't that smart, are likely to be impaired, and suffer tunnel vision focused on either the goodies they're after, or their escape route. There have been at least a couple of videos circulate that show someone trying to pull off a convenience store robbery while a uniformed police officer is standing at the counter.

BG qualms about shooting someone seem to be dropping. We already see robberies where they come in shooting first, not knowing if anyone is armed. I don't know that being visibly armed is going to make someone start shooting when they're not already of a mind to do so.

I've noticed that as well...

I've made my adjustments to be prepared to spend as little time at the counter as possible, since I believe that is the most vunerable place to be in stores like that...

Wallet secure, money or card out, but protected, bag the stuff as quickly as possible sign and get change back fro the clerk as fast as they can manage, and still be friendly and nieghborly to them as I can on the way out...

But always be aware of who's in the store, who's coming in and out, etc etc...

I hate going there, but when the wife craves spciy pork rinds...Well...You gotta do what you gotta do...

We just got back from our NM vacation. I've decided that I want Texas to have open carry. It was nice being able to try on a new belt in the leather shop and disarm for "western photos" (1911 wasn't period appropriate) w/out worrying about breaking the law. I don't like their restriction on carrying (concealed or otherwise) anywhere alcohol is sold(grocery store, gas stations, walmart, normal resaurant)

BTW, if you are ever in Ruidoso, there is a custom leather shop in the Four Seasons Mall on the main street called 'Bill's custom leather and custom boots". He is very reasonable and very nice. Bill made me a 2ply 1.5" leather belt for $50 my 6yr old a 1.25" 2ply for $25 and had them both ready in a couple of hours. He makes boots as well, but is way behind on his boot making (according to him). He also made (is making) me a double mag carrier for my 1911 for $35 and will be mailing it to me this week and didn't charge anything to cover shipping. He is planning on moving back to texas in the next few years. He is a nice guy, and I love to plug small business that do do work for a good price. He makes holsters as well but only has a couple of redguns to work with. He had a ranger style belt rig that hadn't been picked up yet that was really nice, but since I'm not a LEO, it would look funny with my business casual attire in the office so I jut got a regular belt.

NM is open carry? I didn't think it was. I just drove out to Cali and back (over 2 weeks vacation) and found some things disturbing. In NM I had stopped with the family at a Denny's Restaurant. As usual, I scanned the entrance for any signage and found none. I was carrying concealed and thought everything was just fine...until I checked out. As I paid my bill I looked towards the front door. There, on the inside of the door frame was a sign that read something to the effect of "Carrying a handgun on these premises is a 4th degree felony. Violators will be prosecuted" Talk about putting a lump in my throat. I don't know the laws regarding signage there (I looked but couldn't find anything on it before I left). So, I paid promptly and left...........

Needless to say, I was a bit wary after that. I did open carry in Az, but only once while at a remote gas station. I felt pretty uncomfortable and prefer to carry concealed. BUT, I did print like a king at the McDonalds we went to. I just couldn't bring myself to carry open with so many people around. Only had my CHL for a few months though, maybe I'm still too nervous?

I don't remeber what their signage rules are, but I do remember that you can't carry (concealed or open carry) in any place that sells alcohol (even for off-site consumtion) like a resaurant, grocery store or gas station. I don't think they have to post on those establishments, it's your responsability to know if they sell alcohol. They probably post their equivalent of their liquer license on the door or something.

Probably not. I didn't pay much attention to the name of the place in the post.

I don't drink beer and I haven't eaten at a Denny's in over over 10 yrs, so I'll hide behind the veil of ignorance. It is a thin veil and hides little, but I'll take what cover I can find.

No, no alcohol at Denny's. I just found it very unnerving to be confronted with such a sign in an unfamiliar place while carrying.

NM is open carry, but I don't remember their sign/posting related rules. I kept it concealed since they honor the TX CHL. I didn't see any "no gun" related signs anywhere we went, but I did have to leave it in the car a couple of times when we went to restaurants that looked like they served alcohol.
