There is a crime rate comparison on the web done by the National Association of Realtor (IIRC)
here.
Looking at crimes per 100,000 people, Galveston is lower on every crime indicated, except for rape, which is 4
times higher than for Houston, which gives Galveston a slightly higher crime lab index (287 to Houston's 278). Those numbers, BTW are expressed as the persentage of the national average, so they both have nearly 3 times the crime per 100,000 people as the national average.
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
