Also people don't always react the way they think in a crisis. Fight or flight aren't the only reactions. Freeze is also very common, especially in the short term.

This is something I've brought up to my friends before. Myself and quite a few of my friends play private poker games pretty often. We usually do so in a couple of different garages. It's all perfectly legal, seeing as how the "house" doesn't take a cut. Anyways, there are generally at least two CHL'ers at each game, sometimes more.

When we play in these garages, in the summer, usually the door is open to allow a bit of a breeze. I've brought up before that something like what happened in this story could potentially happen to us. Sometimes these games get pretty big, what with the people who aren't good at poker rebuying as much as possible in the first hour.

I'm sad to see that an innocent man died, but also glad to see that no more victims were made.

I've got some points to add to this story.

1st:
As some have already indicated, playing poker is not illegal. Taking a "rake" or percentage of bets is illegal. I've played in some games where it's run nearly identical to an illegal card room (catering/tvs/etc), but take no rake. It's not illegal.

2nd:
This legal room I was playing in was robbed about 4hrs after I had left it. Scary to think about.

3rd:
Apparently, a guy I work with is friends with the GG in this story (at least most of the facts line up with the story I was told & this story). I was interested to hear some of the details that aren't expanded upon in the story:
- the GG's gun jammed after the 2nd shot
- It was a 9mm & the 1st 2 shots did NOT take BG down (imagine that?)
- after clearing the jam & the BG coming back at the GG was when the BG finally went down after some more shots
- as of a week ago when I heard the story, the GG still did not have his pistol back

The question of "9 vs 45" keeps getting answered for me. Granted, we don't know the bullet type or what not, but still.

Also, a reliable firearm system is reinforced. I bought a Bersa Thunder .380 for the woman & it jams frequently when she shoots it (limp wristing?) & the "reliable" question got me thinking.

The question of would you shoot a guy with a gun in the face of your friends/family/stranger? There was a story posted on this forum that people highlighted the story teller's caution of not firing while his friends were having a gun waved at them in anger. I think immediate action is required. "Immediate" in terms of first opportunity, but you can't just sit & wait for that opportunity.

It's late & my sleep meds are kicking in, I don't think I'm making 100% sense. Good night.
