Many thanks to GigAg and pbwalker who both mentioned the Elephant Room in different threads. My wife took me there last night for an early birthday night out. Cool place. We saw the Ephraim Owens Quintet (Owens is a trumpet blower who has obviously listened to a Mikes Davis recording or two - exactly my kind of jazz). The room is great, underground basement bar (yes it's marked 51%), dark with little candles on table, but not smokey. Drink prices were reasonable and cover was only $5.gigag04 wrote:South Congress Cafe is some of the best food in TX.
The elephant room is an amazing underground jazz bar with great musicians.
There are many others but I could fill up this servers hard drives with cool stuff to in ATX. I have the worlds biggest crush on that city.
We ate dinner at the little sushi bar upstairs (Kyoto) and it was good too. Old fashioned 1970s style sushi place, not one of the overpriced yuppie "modern sushi" spots that gets so much attention in Austin these days. The signature "Kyoto" hand roll was very good. And best iced green tea I've found. A bit too much wasabi on the nigiri for my taste, but still good.
Anyway, good night (our first kid-free night in a LONG time). Wouldn't have thought to try it if hadn't read it here first. But did ask my brother (who I affectionately call a "keep Austin weird type" and who has lived here for 15 years and knows downtown better than I ever will) about Elephant Room. He told me he's been and likes it, but when I said wife and I were going his response was "I guess I'll have to stop going there now" ...
