Congadulations, I'm sure you will find it was well worth the wait. Hope you get plenty of ammo soon.cyphur wrote:Well the plastic arrived today. Went out to dinner with the family and my parents, and since I didn't have any ammo, I didn't carry. Tomorrow I have errands to run, so I'll be sure to pick some up while I'm out....
Since I'm now officially in the room--handed mine to the kind folks at the USPS office October 24--it's a good thing it'll be cold enough soon to light the fireplace. I always enjoy a fire when sitting around talking with friends and sipping at a glass of good Port.
We can get NFL games in HD in here, can't we?

Dustin, so close together that, yep, we'll have to watch and compare notes.
Mine was received in Austin October 26; I sent it return receipt, but I don't have the receipt back yet. The wheels are in motion.
And I really don't mind the wait. I haven't settled on the right carry package for me, and won't buy it until the license is in...that'll be my present to myself. Meanwhile, I'm going to take some formal defensive handgun classes, practice more, and maybe think about IDPA. I've decided that's my part of the bargain in exercising the privilege. I shot 250 on the range test, and I confess I came away a little concerned--after experiencing how easy it really is to qualify--that a score of 175 would get someone through. I know if I were in a situation where a CHL holder could save my life by intervening in a crisis, I'd want to believe he or she could shoot that course better than 175 using only the offhand, at dusk, with a borrowed gun, and with the UT marching band playing directly behind 'em.
So I'm gonna take the next two or three months and work diligently on my basic competency.

I would suggest buying your carry rig prior to receiving license, as long as you believe with some certainty that you will be approved. The advantages this provides you with....
- Breaking in quality leather rigs make carry much more comfortable. Since CC is more comfortING than comfortABLE, any extra comfort is welcome.
- Wear it around the house, get used to the feel, and loose the paranoia of having a weapon strapped to your body. It will translate into more confidence during the first few weeks of carry. It will also help you figure out what works best for you, both in fit and concealment.
- Practice with your carry weapon(if you have't purchased it yet). That way, god forbid the worst happens and you are put in a position to use your weapon, it will be more of a reaction and ingrained training that takes over and less panic.

Don't get caught acting stupid in the no stupid zone
76 days from packet to plastic!

Cyphur, thanks for the note.
Actually, I know the basics of what I'll buy as my primary carry gun, just not the model. I'm a shameless 1911 fan. I intend to have a broken-in and reliable carry in a few months, but it'll be the same footprint and mechanics I'm already used to. What I'm really doing is talking myself into a new Wilson Combat for Christmas to go with the Wilson Practical holster I already own.
I figure that already using their holster and magazines, along with getting the CHL, is a good enough excuse to plunk down too much money for a new way-cool 1911...
