I bet you that rifle isn't sighted for a range anywhere near inside that apartment. A shotgun, though, will impact just below where the bead is sighted. I'd sooner trust the 2 inches of buckshot spread I'd get to the front door knowing where it's going to hit, personally.

Having even a well-aimed load of buckshot fly past you on it's way to dispatching the BG would still be an unnerving experience, to say the least.

We don't know the exact situation the good guy was faced with. Whether or not the BG was significantly taller than the woman he held would make a big difference in how much wiggle room there was for shot placement.

Ballistic tables are readily available, and a serious shooter will have noted where his rounds will impact from short range out to long.

If he's on target at a known range with a known load, the table extrapolations would be close enough to work with for up close work that has a few inches of error margin. Some folks I know tape this info to the stock for ready reference.
