In the domestic violence scenario from this thread, I hope that it would not be too hard to convince LE that I, as a disinterested party (I understand that there would be a line of questioning about my relationship to the woman) would hold the upper hand over an ex-husband with a history of assaults and restraining orders.
Exactly my point. A woman asking me for help because of her fear for a husband, ex-husband or boyfriend would have to have an extraordinary story to get that help from me. Even a seemingly innocent request to walk her to her car is like walking around in the bad parts of downtown Dallas a 2am. I'm not saying that I wouldn't try to get her help. If she is fearful, we would call the LEOs and let them handle it. There has to be some sort of trigger for her fear that is based on recent activity. No way am I walking into that. Especially for someone who was married to the guy, divorced after getting a restraining order and suffering physical violence - and then re-married him. "Sorry, m'am, you are on your own."
A friend of ours divorced her husband after a long period of multiple extra-marital affairs. While she was still married to him, she had herself tested for HIV more than once. Duh? Three years later, she re-married him. BTW, it was her 6th time down the aisle but he was the first "two-fer". I'm sorry but that is exactly the kind of situation where, if she called me for help, I'd tell her that she needed 911.
I have no problem walking a single woman to her car at night, depending on the surroundings. I would still question her about why she was fearful and if she even alluded to a DV situation, I'd come up with an alternative. That said, if something did go down and unexpected DV situation cropped up, I still expect the LEOs to sort it. If the two of them have a history together, I'm just an innocent third party.
