I've used home built (newegg/frys for most things) PCs for years. When I started it made sense since the performance I wanted was at the higher end of the spectrum, making building significantly cheaper. My performance requirements have dropped considerably relative to the industry, so now to build a machine with the specs I would be looking for would be more expensive than just buying one. That is, assuming you can't reuse major portions of the current machine (including OS), which I would guess must be true for any machine that is several years old unless it was seriously cutting edge when originally built. When my current machine dies I'll just buy something, probably an HP.

I don't know enough about the stuff you plan to run or the gear you're looking at to say it is better to buy or build, I was just mentioning this as food for thought.
Here you go, I priced same config *got for free liquid cooling and 1K watt power supply*, and 1-yr warranty" price is $500 more plus TX and shipping!

You probably already know about it, but here is a good site for information: http://www.tomshardware.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I'm going to have to build a machine with a lot of horsepower for video editing when I lose my whiz kid to college in January. I've learned a lot on tomshardware.

unless your overclocking the cpu you can save some money by going to the i7-2600 vs the 2600k you have chosen.
also if you get a ati 6950 card that has the bios position swich ( xfx has it) you can reflash the bios to 6970 and have the same ability at less cost. this does work I have done it.
option 2 is you can modifiy the bios of the 6950 to just unlock the added shaders.

for pricing also check micro center and compusa.

I can delete Win 7 and save $70.
There is 5% discount and that is another $125.

Shipping is $75

and Net would be around $2300. $400 more than build your own.

Nice bit of savings there. The hard part is not spending it on another gun! ;-)

If you are going to build your own box, look here B4 you buy all of your parts-

http://www.directron.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Houston based company that I have used for years with very good results. Parts are almost always in stock and prices beat most any other company.
+1 on Directron. Plus, you can pickup - right off of Harwin!!

My computer died a few weeks ago so I went and bought a laptop for $400. So far it does everything I need and actually seems to be faster than my old computer that was a lot more expensive.
