How NOT to do a face to face in walmart parking lot: "rlol" "rlol"
FORT WORTH - Three men accused to trying to smuggle machine guns from Fort Worth to Mexico appeared in federal court Monday afternoon.

As we first reported Friday, the three got caught in a sting set up by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Gabriel Barbosa, Arnulfo Sanchez Castillo and Juan Garza Junior were arrested in a shopping center parking lot off East Loop 820 by federal agents and Fort Worth police.

However, how do you sell a gun locally? You cannot look it over in public but then you don't want to meet without public around you due to safety (especially because a gun is in question) .
Why can't you look it over in public? I do used gun sales the same as used car sales and used electronics sales.

Well, because people will call police, it will come, put you in cuffs with drawn weapons pointing at you, maybe will take you downtown to meet some folks. In short, if people see you handling guns it might just be an experience to remember.

but seriously, I've never had any problems. Just meet in a public parking lot - bigger the better, but even a gas station works. Have gun cased or bagged. Meet, shake hands, put cased gun in back of truck bed and let buyer take a look within the obscured confines of the truck bed. No muss, no fuss.

I personally prefer a Bill of Sale regardless of which side of the deal I'm on - best to cover your backside. But it's not required.

My first private transaction was in the parking lot of a local police station. I had the gun in the back of my Expedition, buyer drove up, looked at it, gave me the cash and within 5 minutes, we both left and were on our way.

My second private purchase was in a McDonald’s parking lot. The seller had the gun in the back of his truck. I checked it out, gave him the cash, put the gun in the back of my car, walked into McDonalds to pick up a happy meal for my daughter and within 10 minutes we were back on the road to our house.

Both transactions were with regular posters on a different gun forum and that's one of the reasons I think everything was so smooth.
Thanks,
Rich

I made a promise to myself years ago that I would never sell another gun. With one exception, every time i've done it, i've regretted it later. Usually, it's because I traded it for something newer and shinier and should have waited the extra month or so to vet it without a trade. Sometimes, the gun ends up being a collectible. Sometimes, while it wasn't right for me at the time, it would have been perfect for a friend or family member or to introduce a new shooter.

The one exception, a Ruger P series in 40S&W. Just never warmed up to it. Would have made a good car gun or trainer. Darn. Make that "i've always regretted selling a gun." :)

It never happened to me or anyone I know but I guess anything is possible. Maybe it depends how suspicious people look.
When in doubt

And what are you basing this on? :headscratch

I hold, look at, aim guns openly considering buying them in Academy and haven't had it happen yet. Seen it happen at yard sales too.

1. meet
2. exchange gun for money
3. ?
4. profit

There's no requirement to record the serial numbers of the money or gun.

Are there any laws about privately selling a gun in Texas.

I am assuming that the person I am selling to is someone who can legally purchase a gun, but is that it.

The buyer should be resident of Texas.

There are but it is real hard to enforce. You can only sell to a texas resident but you don't have to ID them. You can't knowingly sell to a felon or other prohibited person but again, how would you know in most circumstances? I guess if they roll up in a rental car with Cali plates and state they need to go cap somebody since they are out of prison now then you might have a clue.

Darn! I wish I had known about this forum and this thread a few weeks ago. :banghead: I was going to take a near mint 4" Colt Python (manufactured in 1978) to the gun show to try to sell/trade it. The morning I was getting ready to leave, my wife expressed "concern" about me getting mugged in the parking lot or getting ripped off by bad check/phoney money. In order to keep her happy, I ended up going to local range and trading it. I probably could have gotten $100s more if I sold it to third party, but felt this was the safer option. Now I know where I'll list the hunting rifle I want to get rid of (once I've made my 45 posts of course :thumbs2: ).
