...I Googled "age a protected class"...and Wiki came up with a list of protected classes...age only kicks in at 40 or above, according to that...
...I can't make peace with the idea that a young man/woman is old enough to go to big jail, old enough to serve our country, but not old enough to do business in a gunstore...or buy a beer...I think the "age of adulthood" should be settled across the board...by one standard...

Yep, I agree with you that age 18 is old enough to die for our country, they should be allowed to drink and purchase handguns from an FFL.

However, I don't think passing a federal law to create yet another "protected class" is the answer -- the feds already have their hands into everything. I'd like less controls, not more.

I personally would NEVER "sic" the ATF on anyone. I would certainly take my business elsewhere, and I would let them know why. But I have VERY little regard for the ATF in light of all the mess they have made in regards to "Fast and Furious"/"Gunwalker". If I thought a firearms seller was into something "improper", I would report them to LOCAL or STATE law enforcement, who I have respect for. Castigate me all you want, that is simply how I feel about it. I hope the OP has better luck dealing with a seller that is more knowledgeable of the sometimes convoluted laws in this nation regarding firearms.

A 20 year-old is not a "protected class", whereas race, religion, gender, disability, and national origin are "protected classes".
That would apply if they refused to sell to US Citizens who were born in another country or if some redneck refused to teach CHL classes to Muslims because of their relegion.

The ATF rules discriminate between US Citizens and Foreign Citizens. Does that violate Federal Law?
Can we arrest all of them (and Congress, they passed the laws) and ship them all to Gitmo? "rlol"

So I went back to the store, no luck.
The manager I talked to yesterday was not in today. I talked to another manager, showed him all the paperwork and what I printed from the ATF website. He basically said "I understand your situation but I have to go by what the company tells me to do, we have faxed everything to the HQ office and we can't do anything until they come back to us with an answer".

I understand the guy, it's not his fault at all, I am in an odd situation here. I will call the 24Hr contact number in the ATF website and ask them, I may have to go to another business to buy the gun, too bad they have a good price, it is being sold for $599 at Bass Pro Shop that's $100 more for the same gun  , and I have seen many ask for around $500 for used ones :banghead:

I guess I will have to start shopping around other gun stores, will let you all know what they say if they ever call me back from Academy.

...this old man who headed the Dallas office then was a pro...and a prince...he tried to talk to the guy but he wouldn't stop smarting off so the hammer came down...he since died of cancer...the newer crop, I kinda feel the way you do...don't know any of them personally to judge...can't tar all of them with the same brush, though...but you don't have to invite 'em to your birthday party, neither...
...local and state would probably defer to ATF...especially when the Feds haven't let them enforce immigration laws...why should they get involved in other Federal business? I wouldn't...I'd be all three monkeys...

Amazing how we can put someone, who is trying to do it right, through the hoops, but we let guns walk across the border to make some sort of never explained point. Well I guess it explains the pointy heads a lot of these people in Washington DC have.

Good luck to you!

I don't like buying used guns, I know some people only buy used guns and that's fine if they like it that way, me, I prefer new ones.
New guns arent the be all end all of things. They are just like cars and may have to go back to the shop several times to get running right. They also can have an expensive break in round count you need to figure in as well. New guns also are paper trailed right to you in the unlikely event the feds decide to start confiscating. I have a few new ones but most of mine are used and I have had little issue buying them used. Scrwe Academy and go somewhere else, maybe try price matching if it goes back on sale?

...I shop the used market exclusively...there aren't 5 new handguns I'd buy...if I were to buy a battle rifle, I'd go new...

I've bought one firearm from Academy—a Yldiz 20 gauge O/U shotgun for my wife—and the hoops you have to jump through even if you're a CHL holder AND a citizen are a pain in my tuckus. The guys behind the counter are OK, but they just do whatever the company says they have to do. As far as I am concerned, their prices aren't always the best, and I can think of at least one smaller local gun store that has a larger selection.

So after several calls today I told one of the managers "That's fine I'll call the local ATF office to see how is it that I am elegible for a CHL but I'm not so to buy a gun".
20 minutes later they call me back to tell me everything checks out and I am good to stop by the store and pick up the gun.
So here I am at this very moment, but wait, they want to run a background check on me. I told them, hey here is my CHL remember? They are telling me that they need to run my background check or no sale...

They just run the check, they are telling me the system will not give them an answer until tomorrow, that the status is "delayed". I am going home, very frustrated. I will call the ATF as soon as I get home.

...I would, too...and that settles Academy for me...my money won't go to such a bunch of idiots...I hope the notoriety they're getting from treating you this way is worth it to them...

...the Background Check was done on you by the state of Texas before they issued your CHL...

...I think what you meant is that, though you have a CHL, they're calling in the NICS check that, by law, you are not required to have called in on you...if this is so...they're just determined to have the last word...and it should cost 'em money and maybe they'll get a cautioning call from ATF...at least...a lot of us refuse to trade where they insist on calling NICS even though the state says they don't have to...

...I would get on the phone to Academy corporate and let them know about it...maybe they care and need to retrain their store people...maybe they're the cause of it...but it's just wrong...

The prices at our Academy, and at the local Gander Mountain are at least $100 higher on the five to six hundred dollar guns compared to the gun store I have bought all of my guns from. Someone told me that GM prices used to be great, but that they no longer are.
