This happens so often it is getting hard to count how many times I have read about it.

Get way way off the highway or drive on the flat until your way off the highway before you stop your car.

Holy Mary! Growing up in the 50's and 60's my parents would not drive on a flat. Looking back, it was because of the great depression and WWII. During the depression nobody had money to replace a ruined tire, during WWII you couldn't buy a tire. Nowadays tires are relatively cheap and plentiful. Get well off the road a tire and rim isn't worth you life and limb.

I always exit the highway when I get pulled over. Too many people see the flashing lights and stop as soon as they possibly can whether it be in a lane of traffic or on the shoulder. I try to find the closest parking lot and pull in. In my opinion the "click it or ticket" campaign of ads needs to be replaced with a "get out of traffic/off the highway if you need to stop" series of ads.

I've also put a few miles on blown tires/wheel hubs getting OFF the road. A lesson I'm not willing to learn the hard way.
