The different rate is for "Card Present" or "Card Not Present" transactions. "Card not present" would be for internet transactions, or where the card number is manually entered. "Card present" is where the card is swiped, either by the customer or by the merchant.JustMe wrote:terryg wrote:

We take credit cards---they don't have a CLUE whether the customer swipes it or we do!!! SAME discount rate(that is what the fee is called). What does make a difference is whether or not the customer enters a PIN for debit cards--if they enter a PIN, it is treated (and charged to us) as a debit card/transfer--if they don't enter a PIN, it is treated (and charged to us) as a credit card at a higher rate
Yeah, I'm sorry ... I worded that poorly. I have been told that by switching over to customer kiosk systems, merchants were able to pay classify the swipes differently and pay lower rates. Obviously that cant differentiate who swipes the card. But, I haven't been able to find anything to confirm that online so it could be wrong.JustMe wrote: HA HA!!!![]()

Yep. And the credit card companies turn the customers against the merchants. . .JustMe wrote:What does make a difference is whether or not the customer enters a PIN for debit cards--if they enter a PIN, it is treated (and charged to us) as a debit card/transfer--if they don't enter a PIN, it is treated (and charged to us) as a credit card at a higher rate
I'll change tactics when my card starts getting refused.sjfcontrol wrote:Credit and debit cardholders who believe that writing "See ID" or "Check ID" on the signature panel of their cards will help prevent fraud should think again. According to Visa and MasterCard, when a merchant sees "See ID" on the back of a card instead of a signature, that card should not be processed. But as merchants continue to implement technology where the customer does her own card swiping, well, who is really checking?
