At least that was just the speed limit signs stating the law and you could decide to exceed the speed if you so chose. If this is proposed and passed, it would be big brother actually regulating the maximum speed by controlling the vehicle.

As far as I recall there was no option, at least in the areas I lived.

55 MPH was THE limit is what I remember.

There was no option other then to speed. I think here they want to put a governor or speed limiter on the car so it cannot go faster then 70 mph period.

We have something similar on our trucks at work. Just have to know the right mechanic and he'll set the limiter a littler higher and program it to ignore city speed limits.

I give it a week before there's a workaround for this scheme online for all to use.

The proposed "solution" is to mount a camera linked to a computer running speed-limit sign recognition software that ties into a speed governor. That can't be cheap... Who's paying for it? And it's probably not tiny, either, so where's it going to go? And for that matter, how's it going to work with cars that don't already have governors?

Well, then you have the problem of it sometimes not knowing if you're in the outside lane of the highway or the inside lane of the service road. But even accounting for the work required to fix that glitch, yes, your idea would be easier. Almost anything other than what they're proposing would, in fact, be easier (and probably harder to trick).
