I can't imagine Germany and Italy would go for this.

Better than 55 MPH limit we suffered under Carter...
Re: Nanny Europe proposes limiting cars to 70 mph
At least that was just the speed limit signs stating the law and you could decide to exceed the speed if you so chose. If this is proposed and passed, it would be big brother actually regulating the maximum speed by controlling the vehicle.Abraham wrote:Better than 55 MPH limit we suffered under Carter...

gthaustex,
You must remember an option I don't.
As far as I recall there was no option, at least in the areas I lived.
55 MPH was THE limit is what I remember.
Please, someone else chime in - if I'm wrong about the 55 MPH, maybe I'm getting Old Timers disease.

There was no option other then to speed. I think here they want to put a governor or speed limiter on the car so it cannot go faster then 70 mph period.

Sometimes, I'm slow on the uptake - I get it now, Europe wants governors on motors.
Ugh!
I hope the Autobahn folks raise, well, you know...

I volunteer Governor Andrew Quomo and Governor Jerry Brown as the first Governors on motors in Europe!Abraham wrote:Sometimes, I'm slow on the uptake - I get it now, Europe wants governors on motors.

Yeah, no kidding... I wonder if they've thought about what will happen when everyone puts duck tape over the camera lens?gthaustex wrote:At least that was just the speed limit signs stating the law and you could decide to exceed the speed if you so chose. We have something similar on our trucks at work. Just have to know the right mechanic and he'll set the limiter a littler higher and program it to ignore city speed limits.
I give it a week before there's a workaround for this scheme online for all to use.

Yeah, but does it come with a work-around for the cost to buy and install these things? The proposed "solution" is to mount a camera linked to a computer running speed-limit sign recognition software that ties into a speed governor. That can't be cheap... Who's paying for it? And it's probably not tiny, either, so where's it going to go? And for that matter, how's it going to work with cars that don't already have governors?Fangs wrote:We have something similar on our trucks at work. Wow! Wouldn't it be easier to link it to a GPS with road mapping (and speed limit) data?Dave2 wrote:Yeah, but does it come with a work-around for the cost to buy and install these things? Re: Nanny Europe proposes limiting cars to 70 mph
Well, then you have the problem of it sometimes not knowing if you're in the outside lane of the highway or the inside lane of the service road. But even accounting for the work required to fix that glitch, yes, your idea would be easier. Almost anything other than what they're proposing would, in fact, be easier (and probably harder to trick).sjfcontrol wrote:Wow! Re: Nanny Europe proposes limiting cars to 70 mph
I wonder how long it would take pranksters to start sticking speedlimit signs, like 20 kph, on the backs of trucks to mess with people. Imagine going 100 kph and your governor dropping to 20 when you come upon such a truck.
