Virtual Faxing

Post by tacticool »

What software or services do you guys use to send and receive faxes?

I want to fax elected officials asking them to support bills this session. I don't have a home phone so I can't use my computer's fax modem :???: and I don't want to send a stack of personal faxes from work.

I know there are several email-to-fax service providers, but most seem to want a long term contract. That's fine for small businesses, and I suspect that's their target market, but I would prefer a pay-as-you-go plan. Something like 10-20 cents per page sounds reasonable, so I could fax a whole committee for the price of lunch.

I think someone mentioned magicjack for faxes. How does that work? Do you have to plug your fax modem into the magic jack? I went to their website for more information but it looks like they don't officially support faxes. Fax FAQ. My google-fu says it's because fax over VOIP (aka fax over voice over IP  ) has problems in general.

Thank you. :tiphat:

We use eFax. (http://www.efax.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). They have a monthly plan.

I would suggest you investigate:

Best of luck!

Magic Jack will not work with satellite internet, does fine with DSL or cable
Do you have to plug your fax modem into the magic jack?
your fax/scanner/printer "all-in-one thingy or fax machine (or possibly a fax modem maybe if you are faxing straight from a doc/application ... I never tried that through the magic jack).

What I originally did was get a 2 phone to 1 line adapter, plugged phone into the back of the printer/fax machine, set Fax to not answer till 4th ring, and I had an answering machine on the other, (which I since unplugged since magic jack e-maiils voice messages now)

But yes, you plug the phone into the printer/fax machine, and the machine/printer into the magic jack, no need for the 2-jack splitter.

I had ok results with longer phone wire, but had to go to 6' wires when it messed up later

I have an HP all-in-one which faxes (not all models fax, some just copy/print/scan) and a magic jack.
The printer/fax machine needs to be "something I forgot) compatible (most modern ones are) I just got the cheapest HP one that faxes which WalMart had (I first bought another brand, but it didn't print) There is a setting in the printer/fax setup that you can turn off, and if you do, it won't work any more (that whatchacall it compatibility thing)

I use the Pay-as-you-go plan at GreenFax for sending. It's 7c for the first page and 5c per page after that. No monthly fee. You just add to your balance when it gets low. I use a different service for receiving.

I use max email. Good plans for small user, no contract, I do pay extra for a dedicated inbound fax number to receive faxes to my email inbox.

http://www.faxzero.com is what I use, you get 2 free faxes a day at a maximum of 3 pages per fax once you exceed the 2 faxes it's 1.99 a fax, but I never exceed it because I don't fax much :)
